Description

The majority of Dakar residents (23.03% of the Senegalese population) has the bad habit of pouring their household garbage anywhere (like in canals, holes...) and anyhow in the streets and public places. In fact, as soon as the full, housewives tend to leave their garbage outside the house or in the street. outside the house or to dump them in the streets. This pollution has a lot of consequences on the environment as well as on the health of the inhabitants.

In the rainy season, this waste mixed with rainwater is the nest of several bacteria and parasites, including mosquitoes responsible for malaria. In 2021, 19,343 cases and at least 71 deaths due to malaria were recorded in the Dakar region, according to the coordinator of the national malaria control program. The number of deaths due to malaria is high among children under 5 years of age and 2/3 are recorded in this
segment of the population.

How can we reduce the household refuse in public spaces of Dakar to decrease the deaths of children under 5 years old due to malaria?

To remedy this problem we had several solutions which are :
- a smart garbage can
- to make posters of sensitization
- PRN (normalized grouping point)
- Installation of video surveillance in the most frequented streets and subjecting to
to sanctions for people who pollute.
- The implementation of a system of automatic collection of waste deposited on the streets.

We ended up choosing the smart garbage can because it is simpler to implement, more practical and practical and economical.
